Romeo & Juliet, Directed by Rachel Alt - Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. Shakespeare's world-renowned tragedy of two young "star-cross'd lovers" and the role played by their tragic suicides in ending a long-running family feud. This production explores the darker themes of passion, destruction, fate over free will and the consequences of unchecked hatred. (November 8 - 24, 2024)

Character(s) Breakdown (there will be doubling):
a. Romeo: A young man, intelligent, and sensitive. Though impulsive and immature, his idealism and passion make him an extremely likable character.
b. Juliet: She is sheltered and protected by her parents, but longs for freedom and the ability to make her own choices. The character is defined by her youth and innocence, making her journey of self-discovery and rebellion against societal norms all the more impactful.
c. Mercutio: dominant person known for quick wit, a sharp tongue, and playful/flirtatious nature. Lines include a lot of wordplay.
d. Tybalt: Fiery and aggressive personality. Quick-tempered, proud, and fiercely loyal to the family. Harbors a deep hatred for the Montague family and is always ready for a fight. Tybalt is stubborn and holds onto grudges, often seeking revenge for any perceived slights.
e. Benvolio: Romeo's cousin. Benvolio serves as an unsuccessful peacemaker in the play, attempting to prevent violence between the Capulet and Montague families.
f. Friar Laurence: A wise and compassionate character. Known for religious devotion and belief in the power of reconciliation. The Friar has a deep understanding of human nature and believes in the potential for change and redemption.
g. Lord Capulet: Juliet’s father. Known for his authoritative and domineering personality. He is a proud and commanding figure who expects obedience from his family and those in his household. He can be quick-tempered and displays a fierce loyalty towards his family's honor. However, he also exhibits moments of tenderness and genuine concern, particularly when it comes to his daughter, Juliet.
h. Lady Capulet: Juliet’s mother. Obsessed with appearances and with advancing Juliet’s social station. She is ignorant of her daughter’s true feelings most of the time, and, even when confronted with them, urges her daughter to put on a brave face, accept fate, and comply with her family’s plans for her.
i. Paris: Suitor to Juliet. He presents himself with elegance and sophistication, reflecting his high social standing.
j. Nurse: The maid and nurse of Juliet. She serves as a close confidante to her throughout the story, knowing Juliet better than her mother does.
k. Prince: Known for an authoritative and responsible nature. Takes the role as the ruler of Verona seriously and strives to maintain peace and order in the city. Fair-minded and seeks justice, as seen in the attempts to mediate and resolve conflicts between the feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets. Despite a firm demeanor, the Prince is also compassionate and understanding, displaying mercy when necessary.
l. Apothecary: Also know as the angel of death. Will have a recurring role throughout the play.
m. Abraham/Balthazar: Servants of the Capulet Household.
n. Sampson/Gregory: Servants of the Montague Household
